I have not widely publicized it, but I and 20 other family members sent a formal request to the NYC Dept of Investigations for a complete investigation into this matter by them, not by the M.E.'s office or anyone else. I also submitted a list of questions that we want answered. The letter sent out yesterday is really a response to this request. I have heard nothing from the DOI, but we are not going to accept silence, cover up, and modifying what should be standard protocol, policies and proceedrues to fit the agenda of the City. Also, the laptop caper is the most blatent example of unethical behavior and violation of the privacy rights of the families of the victims of 9/11 that I could ever imagine. Now I might have been born at night but it wasn’t last night. You don’t accidentally drop nearly 300 remains without someone noticing. What about all of the WTC material that has also been recovered but not reported? We are to believe that all of this was somehow missed as well, along with the two 18 foot steel beams. Nearly 300 remains from an area that we had to fight to get them to excavate. Nearly 300 remains and they are not even three quarters of the way through the excavated material from the haul road. Nearly 300 remains and they have not really even started the site of the Greek Orthodox Church. Add this to the 785 remains from a building that was searched and researched. Add this to the 209 remains from the manhole that was supposed to be an isolated incident (remains that many feel came from one victim) Over 1300 remains and not one identification. Add all of this to the fact that we don’t even know if any of these remains have even been tested. Now we are told that they will be closing a portion of West Street because they found areas where they think remains might have been left. They do the names in a manner and create an entire memorial absent of 9/11 that inspires nothing but as memorial James E. Young warned of regarding memorials: a "paralyzing self-consciousness." Here he wishes to employ it to effective purpose. We are left with nothing to do at the WTC site except explore ourselves to no avail or no end. It is nothing but an extended act of vanity. Gazing endlessly at our own reflections; gazing endlessly into our own "inner selves." And the great offense is that this is at a "tribute" to 9/11 - a day marked by vanity to the final extreme by the terrorists; they put themselves in the place of God - and final humility by so many Americans in response - who gave their lives or were willing to risk them only for the sake of others - faith, patriotism - somehow this will turn out right, even if the worse happens. That's what they were counting on us for. If the worst happened, and for many the worse was happening and they had no choice but to greet it - that they would be remembered; that the full meaning of their final moments and deaths would be conveyed and honored and provide inspiration and resolve.
